A model is a simplified representation of a system.
Health and disease, and for that matter all biological and environmental reality, is complex. There are limits to human ability to understand complexity, so we build models of complex systems because we cannot comprehend such a system in its entirety. A model properly chosen can enable us to work at higher levels of abstraction.
